When visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are forever changed by a mysterious, wealthy client. Filming took place over a total of 34 days. It was shot in Budapest, Hungary and Carrara, Italy. Bright and bold, "Brutalism" was the name given to a style of modern architecture that flourished in the 50s and 60s. Light and shadow danced dramatically across its walls and through its bold windows. — nominated for multiple Golden Globes, including best drama — is also a work of architecture. If you can get past the title and its three-and-a-half-hour running time, it offers epic visions of immigrant aspirations and the American dream (both pros and cons) through a highly stylized Best Actor nominee Adrien Brody. With a fearless performance as Lady Toth, a brilliant Hungarian-Jewish architect who survived the carnage of World War II in her homeland and arrives at the Statue of Liberty hoping to start over, upside down in the poster, because that’s how it first appears to immigrants emerging from the holds of steamships, László’s odyssey leads into the boundless optimism of postwar Philadelphia.
The fates of both men will change
His wife Erzsébet (Felicity Jones, another Globe nominee) will follow a few years later, along with their niece Zsófia (Raffey Cassidy). Meanwhile, the famous creator is relegated to a menial existence in his new homeland. Eating in soup kitchens, sleeping in shelters, shoveling coal to make a living, he crosses paths with the ultra-wealthy businessman Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. Guy Pierce earned his third Globe nomination for Best Actor with perhaps the best performance of his career. Urban and handsome, the ultimate WASP patrician, Harrison’s soft voice and carefully chosen words mark a stark contrast to László’s still-uncomfortable alienation.
They are a union of opposites, each with a strong will and an indomitable ego
Although their first meeting is disastrous, Van Buren soon admits not only to his admiration but also to his envy of the immigrant’s genius. To create a monumental cultural center and memorial to his late mother, the structure slowly rises up the hill on the Van Buren estate. Their relationship and their families’ also evolve from master and hired help, through co-worker bonds to brotherly intimacy… and then director/co-writer Brady Corbett returns again, seemingly sharing his characters’ great confidence in their abilities. At 36, his evolution from actor to A-list filmmaker prompts comparisons to a young Orson Welles’ arrival in Hollywood with the groundbreaking “Citizen Kane.” Considering that “The Brutalist” had a budget of less than $10 million, its sheer scale and scope, not to mention its exceptional sense of style, are astonishing marvels.

Paired with Lol Crawley’s dazzling cinematography, Brady creates a historical and industrial take on the era. It features brilliantly curated songs set to a montage of historical radio broadcasts, commercials, and ambient noise, meditating on the cost and reward of genius, and on an even deeper level, The Brutalist, shows the cost of assimilation.
