A tense, scary, melancholic, suffocating fantasy thriller with shades of a ghost story
Chronology
The child follows Emma on her journey to learn to communicate with the spirit of a girl, Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermitage for centuries, so she tries to convince Carol, a skeptical medium, to help her. A supernatural thriller full of scary actions, thrills, chills and a lot of scares; however, some are confusing and inexplicable, the causes of some creepy events are never well explained. The film presents a fictional story of social reality that has struck a small town. It begins with an apparent historical prologue about a plague epidemic, a chapel where the sick are confined, and a regiment of beaked birdmen, but it is a recreation of a small town’s annual festival, when the chapel, believed by little Usoa to be haunted, is opened for a short spell. The child follows Emma (Maia Zaitegi) as she learns to communicate with a girl, Uxoa, who has been trapped in a hermit’s den for centuries, so she tries to convince Carol (Belén Rueda), a skeptical and fake medium, to help her.
A tense, mysterious film, full of thrills, suspense, chills, red herrings, creepy twists
The latter literally has scars from her childhood, when her real medium mother seemed more interested in the ghost of a local little girl than her own daughter. This is a passable and acceptable film, with a lot of not always sympathetic, deeply human and relatable main characters. . This is a haunted film, with unsettling horror and a sinister atmosphere when the menacing creatures appear. Step by step, the mystery begins to unfold until the surprising finale, which becomes a sentimental ghost story, with serious, brooding overtones in the manner of “The Orphanage” or “Pan’s Labyrinth”, but with its own characteristic female focus.
He sinks as the recording continues and prevents us from talking about a gem like 'Cerdita'
It is an attractive drama whose interest wanes as the tiresome accumulation of supposedly terrifying elements increases. While ¨Cerdita¨ in ¨La Ermita¨ focuses on sheer terror, several things confirm that Pereda is a key figure in the current horror and fantasy genre. One is his first foray into genre cinema: he bets without hesitation on fantasy, adding some personal drama. Despite this, Pereda manages to make a film that is more than worthy, but weaker than the previous one. Pereda has a great eye for the Gothic, enjoying the trappings of Spanish horror while not really making a horror film.
la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive)
It turns out to be an adequate and decent film, but not remarkable. In the lead roles, Belén Rueda gives a nice performance in her usual style, an actress expert in mystery and horror films such as: Julia’s Eyes, The Orphanage, No dormirás, Durante la tormenta, The Pact, Orbita 9 and The Body. In fact, Belén Rueda is the closest thing Spain has to a horror heroine, or a “Scream Queen”, well matched by the prodigy Maia Zaitegi, who evokes the young Ana Torrent in Cria Cuervos or El espiritu de. The motion picture was professionally directed by Carlota Pereda who is clearly a talented writer and filmmaker. As a female drama with a similar tone to the genre, this is the second solid showcase for Pereda’s talent.
It won the official feature film section of the 2023 Sitges Film Festival (out of competition) and was nominated for the 2023 Goya Award (Spain): Best Special Effects
Her first film was the much better ¨Cerdita¨, which was directed by Carlota Pereda, winner of the Goya Award for Best Short Film in 2018, and starred Laura Galán. Rating: 5.5/10.
