Christianity does not exist in this universe
The city of New Rome faces a battle between Cesare Catiline, a brilliant artist bent on creating a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after filming 30 hours of second-unit footage and table reads with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey. The project was canceled after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicted” the attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007, and did not begin developing it again until 2019. At 21:40, Catilina’s character utters the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” in awe. Yet in the universe, the city of New Rome comes from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The will of Cronus” or at 1:01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many more depictions of Roman deities). There is no reason why Catilina would use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!”; and in such a context…
Julia Cicero: Yes
Cesar Catilina: *Do you* want to help me? And, well, I… well, I want to learn. Cesar Catilina: And you think one year of… medical school gives you the right to rummage through the riches of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Does it give me the right? Cesar Catilina: Yes. Julia Cicero: [sneers] Call me? Cesar Catilina: Yes!
Cesar Catilina: YEEEEEEES!
Julia Cicero: Call me? Julia Cicero: You have no idea about me! You think I’m nothing but a socialite? Cesar Catilina: No, nothing, but I reserve time for people who can think. About science. And literature and… architecture and art. Do you think I’m cruel, selfish and heartless? I love them.
Julia Cicero: Fine!
I work without caring what happens to one of us. So go back to the cluuuub, reveal everything and watch the people you love. I will. Cesar Catilina: Come back when you have more time!. The cinematography was certainly a spectacle. However, the special effects were either a strong compliment to the footage or were embarrassing to look at.
I’m ashamed to say I liked it
I enjoyed the films dreamy aesthetic, but the dialogue was either cartoonishly hard to keep up with or felt like it served no purpose to the plot/characters. My least favorite part of the film was definitely the Virgin Pledge sequence. It didn’t do anything for the story either, but the song was really good and the visuals were pleasing to the eye. Overall, this film is definitely not for most people. It’s a scary movie that I enjoyed for its unusual performances that gave me a good laugh.
